Stormwater is the runoff from intense rain that migrates on hard surfaces like carparks, loading docks, paved areas, driveways, roads, gutters, roofs and machinery and does not soak into the ground. Once reaching outdoor stormwater drain inlets, the water continues on, eventually reaching natural waterways untreated.
Stormwater may also be absorbed into unpaved natural or manmade green habitats and be absorbed by flora or be taken up through evaporation. Excess water though will still make its way into water systems, like creeks, estuaries, and in some cases coastlines waters.
|
|
As the wash flows over land, sediments, chemicals and other pollutants contrary to natural environments find their way through stormwater systems into waterways and natural habitats. Examples of migrating pollutants may include:
- Oil, grease, fuels, coolant
- Paints, solvents, fertilisers and detergents
- Ground litter
- Animal waste
|
|
It is also important to note that large quantities of natural organic pollution such as sediment, grass clippings and leaves can also compromise natural waterways to cope with sudden inundation, risking growth of toxic algae among other harmful effects to marine environments.
|
|
|
Providing large-scale solutions to prevent stormwater pollution and heal affected marine environments is complex. Although with invested concentrated efforts, technology and town planning, this area is advancing. Checking in with local council, state and federal guidelines is also recommended. However, a major way collectively we can make a positive impact is focussing on how we manage our industrial worksites by lowering the risk of pollutants accessing stormwater inlets in preparation and during heavy rainfall.

Here a just a couple of straightforward solutions that will assist with lowering the effect of stormwater pollution entering waterways:
- Wash vehicles at commercial car and truck wash facilities
- Do not use stormwater drains to dump waste
- Allow only approved, compliant treated liquids to enter stormwater drains
- Use filters when pumping out stormwater and silt-laden water
- Store chemicals and other pollutants in appropriate storage. i.e. Chemical Storage Cabinets, Bunded storage areas.
- Keep driveways, carparks, and loading docks free of trash & clean up spills immediately.
Below are also a couple of economical SpillSmart solutions that will assist with environmental compliance and lower the effect of stormwater pollution entering waterways on site:

The Drain Warden sits suspended in the drain pit, held into place by the weight of the grate itself. Water entering the drain, filters through the polypropylene geotextile material and a highly absorbent bilge sock. Hydrocarbons, Silt, Oil, Trash, debris and other pollutants are easily absorbed or collected as water freely passes through the filter.

SpillSmart Silt Warden has been designed for industrial and construction worksites. This heavy-duty drain filter is installed easily and fits securely under the drain grate. Sitting suspended, the filter captures, sand, dirt, sediment, rubbish, worksite debris, leaves, and sticks whilst water passes through with ease.

Both of these silt socks are effective when placed around site stormwater inlets or across open drains to slow the velocity of flowing water runoff and retain suspended sediment. By minimising or preventing the amount of silt and sediment loss on site reaching stormwater inlets.

These reusable booms are despatched empty, filled on-site and can be placed around various stormwater inlets or across open drains to reduce and redirect water flow or contain a spill on hard surfaces. Joiners are also available to create continuous lengths and optimal bunding solutions.

Bunded Spill Pallets are a great option when storing Drums, IBC’s and other containers to contain accidental leaks from entering the environment. In outdoor storage scenarios, supplied with a cover and frame, they are protected from weather preventing debris and rainwater from entering the sump. With continued monitoring, this can prevent water from accumulating and overflowing causing the spill from entering stormwater inlets.

Spills will occur at some time on any given day. The most important aspect here is to clean up the spill immediately. An oil or hydraulic leak for example, from a freight truck loading or unloading on-site, may end up being a small spill but if not cleaned up immediately, is another example that in a rain event of the potential of those pollutants washing into a nearby stormwater drain inlet. The SpillSmart range of Spill Kits provides a number of sizes and spill kit types to clean up a huge variety of liquid contaminants.
