Whether you are storing, warehousing, transporting, or loading and unloading liquid storage drums, chances are you will end up with a spill.
As safe as storage drums, barrels and large liquid storage containers are, leaks can eventuate. Common causes may be corrosion of fittings, threads being worn or gaskets deteriorating. Often spills occur from human error due to miss handling and transportation, particularly during the loading and unloading process. Common failures include puncture by forklifts tines, nails, impact with sharp objects and structurally damaged drums.

This highlights the importance of having the appropriate Spill Kits on-site and as part of a spill control plan, having the ability to stop the spill at the source when a drum is punctured. In the event of an incident, stopping the leak from continuing is a high priority! Ensure you are wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment before attempting a temporary repair. Although SpillSmart SpillPlug is a natural product, wearing the correct PPE such as gloves is to provide protection from the leaking fluid.
A handful of SpillPlug applied to the puncture will immediately stop a Drum puncture from leaking with no preparation required. If SpillPlug is not able to be used immediately, if safe to do so, position the drum so the liquid is below the puncture. Secure or chock the drum in place with wood, bricks or rocks and then plug the puncture with SpillPlug. With the temporary repair in place, correct absorbents can be deployed to clean up the spill and the remaining fluid safely transferred to a suitable drum or container.
