Flooding in Australia is a normal event, yet why are so many people unprepared? Unfortunately, on so many occasions many businesses and homes have very little warning when flooding is about to occur. Especially in circumstance of flash flooding where predicting is very difficult.

Currently, we are all just starting to receive news that on the East Coast of Australia, there is a strong chance of another La Nina forming during spring and early summer. With catchments still sodden from previous events and many dams along the east coast at or overcapacity, the news for many can be worrying.
For those particularly living in flood-prone areas, this is no doubt the time to become flood ready! We know as a manufacturer of flood products the panic of when flooding is already creeping in is when people desperately seek our FloodSmart Flood Pillows for example. For some, it can already be too late! It doesn’t have to be this way. Being flood ready is important. Bellow are some important considerations worth getting ready or organising in preparedness for when flooding occurs.
- Plan the safest route to evacuate your property if roads begin to be cut off. Your local council may be able to provide you with their flood plan outlining problem areas and evacuation routes.
- Traditionally labour-intensive, heavy, difficult to store and manage sandbags have been at the frontline of defence to protect property assets from intruding flood water. They can be logistically challenging also when time counts. Having FloodSmart Flood Pillows ready to go for many is a great option. In packs of 5, 50 can be stored on a shelf in a small carton or, if required, 1000 in 20 cartons on a pallet. They self-activate in fresh water, require no sand and highly reduce the risk of injury when handling compared to sandbags. SpillSmart Water-Filled and Sand-Filled Booms are also effective flood barriers. Easy to store and re-use. (see below for further information)

- Have a plan for where you will move vehicles, outdoor goods and equipment. Remember especially any chemicals, poisons and garbage that could become possible pollutants if caught by flood waters.
- Check you have long-life food ready, torch, batteries, first aid kit, water, toilet paper, waterproof bags, blankets, some cash and clothing.
- Have a plan for your pets.
- Have access to radio for news updates.
- Keep family and friends updated, particularly if you choose to evacuate.
- DON’T DRIVE THROUGH FLOOD WATER.
