For people meeting us for the first time with little or no knowledge of our company, we inevitably receive the question, “So, what is it that you guys do?” A succinct answer we may respond with can be, “Envirosmart is a spill control manufacturer that designs and builds a range of products that prevent, contain and clean up spills on land or water.” Of course, there is still a lot more the Envirosmart group provides, but in a nutshell, that statement certainly covers our heartbeat. To take the statement further, flavouring it a little with some industry terminology, we are saying “Envirosmart is a specialist spill control manufacturer, who designs, engineers and supplies Passive and Active containment product solutions through our distributor network.”
Active and Passive containment also, in so few words, broadly describes two ways many secondary containment products meet compliance requirements. Requirements that focus on the most likely discharge from equipment or a container and how it is contained or managed. These more manageable spills are of course the most common type of spill as opposed to spills of a major event magnitude. So, is one more important than the other? Rather than creating debate, perhaps the best response is simply acknowledging the importance of different, yet complementary applications, Active and Passive Containment products bring to the table.

These are products or devices you can put into place to contain a spill before a spill occurs. The ol’ “prevention is better than cure” kind of idea. These products may be Permanent, Semi-permanent or even temporary. We are talking about unmanned reliable devices that when put into place provide continuous spill protection. Examples of Passive Containment Solutions include:

These products are all about hands-on action and involvement. It can be both proactive or reactive. At the end of the day, it is simply someone taking action to deploy or put into place, the appropriate spill product. So, Passive Containment spill products are unmanned containment devices put into place and monitored providing continuous protection in the event of a spill. Active Containment Spill Products require deployment by trained personnel. They may be put into place as a preventative measure before a job begins, or deployed in response to a spill.
