Working with and around acid and bases has its own risks. Particularly at concentrated levels. These chemicals certainly have the potential to cause serious injury. Injuries may include tissue damage chemical burns and respiratory distress caused by fumes. When acid and base spills occur, the spills need to be handled safely and quickly. Using incompatible materials to clean up these types of spills can cause further hazards and increase the risk of injury.
SpillSmart AcidSorb and BaseSorb are both granular powders designed to encapsulate and neutralise these hazardous Spills. Both products are designed with a pH indicator visually showing through change of colour that the powder is taking affect and when the spill is neutralised. Whether using Acid Sorb for Acids or BaseSorb for Bases the spill response clean-up process is the same.

Be sure to assess the risks when handling aggressive chemicals. Consult with the chemical manufacturer's SDS sheet for specific safety information and recommended PPE.

- Choose the appropriate neutralising absorbent for the hazardous liquid requiring to be cleaned up and ensure appropriate P.P.E. is worn.
- SpillSmart AcidSorb examples: Sulphuric, Nitric, Phosphoric, Hydrochloric Acids.
- SpillSmart BaseSorb examples: Sodium Hydroxide, Potassium Hydroxide, Ammonium Hydroxide.
- Sprinkle the neutraliser absorbent around the spill working your way into the middle.
- Once applied to the spill, colour change transformations will indicate that neutralisation is taking place. Ensure the powder has covered all of the liquid evenly.
- Allow for the powder to encapsulate and neutralise the spill.
- AcidSorb indicates Red as Highly Acidic. Yellow as Slightly Acidic and Purple as Neutral.
- BaseSorb indicates Blue as Highly Caustic and Orange as Neutral.
- Once neutral, the spill will solidify into a gel and is now able to be swept or scooped up and disposed of in accordance with local regulations.
