Our altered urban landscapes, replacing the vegetated areas they once were, have necessitated the need for stormwater drains to manage quantities of rain off roofs, carparks, roads and other man-made hard surfaces. Without the natural environment to absorb surplus rain, stormwater drains were created to channel excess groundwater, into streams, creeks, estuaries and waterways.

The challenge is, many ground surfaces hold contaminated liquids, washing into stormwater inlets with rain, spills and by other means. These polluted liquids are largely untreated when discharged. Drain protection, therefore, is an essential element in a spill control plan. In a spill event, contaminated fluids must be prevented from entering stormwater drains and manholes to prevent potentially insurmountable damage to waterways and the environment.

The SpillSmart Drain Cover is one such device that will provide protection for your drain. In the event of a spill, this portable device fits over a drain opening, creating a tight seal. The Drain Cover is highly resistant to many chemicals and creates a seal by the activation of specially designed polymer powder that activates with water. The expanding powder converts to a gel-like mass in the seal pocket easily moulding to uneven surfaces when pressed into place. Economical to freight they are dispatched flat with the right amount of polymer supplied with detailed instructions to fill with water on site. Alternatively, they can be dispatched filled and ready for deployment.

The Drain Cover is manufactured from Heavy Duty 900gsm PVC and features 4 x 25mm webbing handles for convenient hanging storage and lifting. An internal sewn foam layer in the base enhances its ability to seal, finished with a 270gsm Geofabric polypropylene underside.
