Particularly for those of us commuting to work and spending time on the road in cities, traffic accidents are a regular occurrence. Many of us listen intently when traffic bulletins are announced on the radio or use satellite navigation technology to avoid a growing traffic jam. It’s an unsettling feeling driving past an accident whilst silently ‘hoping and wishing the best’ that those involved are ok. Later, it then becomes the job for emergency workers to clean up the scene.

Whether the traffic incident is major or minor, it's very common for petrol, oil and other contaminants to leak onto the road. Traditionally, these fluids are cleaned up with ‘Kitty Litter’ type products. But is this the best option in these circumstances?
When ‘Kitty Litter’ type products are deployed to take up the oil and fuel spill, they do so by acting as an adsorbent. Meaning, the clay-type particles allow the oil and fuel to adhere to its surface. Although the liquid may adhere, at least for a time, if left too long the oil has potential to seep back on to the road or onto other surfaces during handling. For those of us who have used ‘Kitty Litter’ products, you already know how heavy it can be and just how much you need to apply to clean up the fluid. Creating a greater mess to clean up the original mess isn’t the most effective use of anyone’s time, particularly when roads need to be cleared and reopened as soon as possible without a slick left at the location. And what about the particles left behind? Yep, the oils and other fluids end up back on the road and into the environment. In damp weather, it’s not uncommon to see those rainbow patches on the road once an accident has been cleared.

So what’s the alternative? Ultimately, the best solution is applying an absorbent to take up the oil and fuel left on the road. Products like SpillSmart’s RoadSpill and FloorSweep are made from biodegradable organic cellulose materials. A clear winner compared to ‘Kitty Litter’ products as the particulates absorb the road contaminants and encapsulate them, never to be released. This in itself, highly reduces residue or slicks left from a spill and any particles left behind will biodegrade without leaching back into the environment. Both products are easy to manage and require less product compared to ‘Kitty Litter’ alternatives. RoadSpill also incorporates an added mineral base leaving the surface gritty to reduce slippage, improving the safety for onsite workers, vehicles and machinery.
