Most industrial businesses will have a number of flammable liquids stored on site. These may be in the form of fuel, diesel, kerosene, paints, solvents, varnish and methanol. Although flammable liquids are part of everyday work life, we also need to acknowledge the risk posed to people, the environment, property, the organisation and neighbouring businesses. Vapours from flammable liquids combined with an ignition source are capable of causing destructive fires, putting all personnel at risk of death or serious injury. Flammable vapours in large quantities are capable of asphyxiating people, causing them to pass out. Organisations therefore, are mandated to reduce the risk of the storage of flammable liquids in a safe and compliant way. A flammable storage cabinet is a key consideration for many organisations in order to mitigate risk with the use of a compliant flammable safety cabinet.

Below is a summary of key specifications Flammable Safety Cabinets are required to have, to meet compliance to AS1940-2017.
(see Australian Standard AS1940-2017 for the specific information regarding compliance for The Storage of Flammable and Combustible Liquids.)
- Fire Protection - SpillSmart Flammable Cabinets are designed with double layered welded steel construction with 38mm of insulating airspace for fire resistance. These cabinets ensure safe evacuation time in the event of a fire allowing personnel 10 minutes egress from their work area in the event of a fire or to give at least 10 minutes to extinguish a fire with firefighting equipment or with a sprinkler system if fitted to extinguish flames.
- Segregation - Flammable cabinets allow for the storage of class 3 liquids to be safely stored and grouped together. Examples of incompatible substances to be segregated from class 3 liquids are Oxidising agents, Organic peroxides, Toxic substances and corrosive substances.
- Spill containment - If flammable liquids spill in the cabinet, a sealed sump is necessary to contain the spill to prevent slips, trips and falls, a potential fire ignition and damage to the environment. SpillSmart Flammable cabinets contain galvanised steel shelves that direct spills and leaks to the rear and down to the bottom of the cabinet into a leak proof sump.
- Protection - Flammable cabinets are required to provide protection against the cabinet's contents potentially mixing with external contaminates and protect against damage from external objects such as machinery and vehicles. SpillSmart Flammable cabinets offer heavy duty protection constructed from 1mm thick double wall, welded steel. Self-latching close-fitting doors close securely for maximum protection under fire conditions and to prevent external contaminants from interacting with the stored flammable liquids.
- Storage Cabinet Signage - Flammable storage cabinets must be clearly signed to ensure onsite personal are clearly aware flammable liquids are being stored inside. Signage should include the Flammable Liquid Class 3 Pictogram with a 2nd sign warning ‘No Smoking No Ignition Sources Within 3m.
The investment of Flammable Safety Cabinets decreases the risk to personnel, the environment, property and potentially neighbouring businesses when the requirement of storing flammable liquids is unavoidable. They also provide an organised convenient storage solution, particularly when space is premium.
