There is often some confusion about our Drain Wardens, a product sometimes called a Drain Filter. The confusion often revolves around choosing the correct size for the Drain site.
Recently, Envirosmart Managing Director, Steve Clark shared some great advice.
Where do most people get confused Steve?
“First of all, the size of the Drain Warden you request is mostly sized on the size of the basin, not the size of (the top) the Skirt. Of course, the Skirt still plays a role in the sizing, but it is secondary, and this is where the confusion is.”
The key therefore, is to firstly focus on the size of the Drain Pit rather than the size of the Drain Grate or opening?
“Yes. For example,” Steve shares, “the Basin changes depending on the depth of the stormwater pit you wish to install it in. For example, a 600mm x 600mm Drain Warden has a very small 300mm deep basin. This is for very small, shallow drains. A 900mm x 900mm has a 450mm basin, again for a shallow basin that might be going into a 600mm x 600mm stormwater pit.”
Is there a common size for Drain Pits?
“Most stormwater pits are over 600mm deep and are 600mm x 600mm or larger and so the most popular Drain Wardens we supply are the 1200mm x 1200mm with a 600mm basin. This allows correct fitting for multiple size drains and with the bigger basin, helps with maximizing the water flow before needing to utilise the bypass feature of the product.”
Any last tips or advice?
“If your client's drain is a normal depth and 600mm x 600mm in width, a common mistake is to think you need a 600mm x 600mm x 300mm basin Drain Warden. This would be incorrect and undersized, firstly because it will struggle to stay fixed in the drain as it needs to be larger than the opening and you dramatically reduce the water flow capabilities of the basin. Mostly you will go with the 1200mm x 1200mm with a 600mm basin, unless it is a very small and shallow drain.”
