Our thoughts are with all those who have been affected by the recent flooding event across Australia. These events present so many challenges for so many people and we acknowledge the effort of so many who have supported those in need across so many communities.
We also thank the many people who have given positive feedback on the effectiveness of FloodSmart Flood Pillows. The most common question we are receiving is “The FloodSmart Pillows did a great job! But what do I do with them now? So, below we will answer this question and the other most common questions associated with it.

Can FloodSmart Flood Pillows be re-used?
In most cases, yes, they can be used again. Provided the water the Flood Pillows were used in wasn’t contaminated, reuse is an easy task. Left out in sunny conditions the water will evaporate from the pillows as they begin to shrink. Depending on local weather this may take approximately 6 - 8 weeks. You will notice the pillow will shrink, flatten and the contents will feel crunchy. At this point, they should be folded and stored in a sealed plastic container. The Flood Pillow will begin to activate again once in contact with fresh water and moisture. For a household leak, like a drip from the roof or a leaky appliance, re-using is a great option.
If the Flood Pillows have been in contact with contaminated water such as sewerage, disposing of in general waste will be the best option.

Can the Flood Pillows be left in place and for how long?
In extended rainfall seasons, they may be left in place for 12 – 26 weeks for ongoing protection. They will remain inflated whilst in contact with fresh water and moisture. They will not quickly deflate. It may stop raining for a few days and reflood and they will be ready. If they were left indoors say with an internal garage leak, they could easily be left in place for well over 12months. When the leak occurs, water will absorb into the pillow and inflate, evaporate when it's dry and reactivate when the leak reoccurs. If the Flood Pillow is activating unevenly, manipulate the contents from the outside of the pillow with your hands to even out.

Can Flood Pillows Float away?
If they are just placed down flat (straight out of the packaging) they could float away if not activated in flowing water. Pre-activating the pillows with hose water, soaking in a freshwater pool (not salt water) or buckets of floodwater is recommended. Stack higher than the water. If stacking over 3 pillows high, widen the base to create a solid foundation to build on in a brick formation.

What if I have a whole heap of Flood Pillows I want to get rid of?
Being an environmentally safe product, they can be disposed of with your general waste. When cleaning up after flooding always use gloves to reduce the risk of contamination from floodwaters. Here are some other options:
- Allow the water to evaporate naturally in dry conditions and then dispose of with general waste. The bags will become stiff, the contents crunchy and they will weigh much less making disposal easier.
- Empty the gelled contents into an area of the garden or spread across a grass lawn. The UV rays will then allow the gel to disintegrate. Use this method with caution as the Polymer contents will be slippery. Do not allow the contents to land on walkways as they may create a slipping hazard. The Geotextile covering can then be placed in general waste.
- Adding salt or saltwater to the contents may also break down the gel allowing for disposal in with general waste.
